A year and a half ago, an unidentified young man was rushed into the operating room, hovering between life and death. We didn’t know his name, and no one with him could identify him. An exploding bullet had pierced his skull, causing a severe brain hemorrhage, comminuted fractures of his skull bones, and a portion of his brain tissue protruding. There was no CT scanner, and no anesthesiologist. Nevertheless, we had no choice but to try to save his life. The operation lasted over three hours under conditions no surgeon in the world would wish to work in. Against all odds… he survived. After two days in intensive care, as he gradually regained consciousness, his family searched everywhere for him. After a grueling effort, he was identified. His name was Hossam. But his survival wasn’t the end of the story. He had lost a significant portion of his skull and lived at risk of brain injury from even the slightest trauma. So, as we told you before, Hossam would need a skull reconstruction surgery outside of Gaza, because performing it within the Strip seemed impossible given the available resources. But in Gaza… we learned that the word “impossible” doesn’t last long. At dawn on July 18, thanks to God, we were able to perform the skull reconstruction surgery for Hossam at the Arab National Hospital. Today, Hossam returned home. He left the hospital the next day, recovering excellently. He no longer speaks of pain or fear, but of his dream of attending university, building his future, and returning to a normal life. June 14 marked the beginning of our efforts, following more than three months of preparation. Prior to this, we launched a patient registration link. Within 48 hours of the link’s launch, over 1,400 patients registered, preparing for the first day of treatment as part of a medical convoy to the far north of the devastated Gaza Strip. The initial plan aimed to assist and treat 30-35 patients, depending on available resources. However, thanks to God’s grace, our tireless efforts resulted in double the number. We reached 70 patients who received medical and neurological care, and approximately 40 patients in other specialties. We have proven that service can be provided under the most difficult circumstances the world is witnessing, and we launched our project before the eyes of the world with a strong heart and a message we carry from all of you. “Where humanity meets healing.” This isn’t just a slogan; it is the mission driving the SUMUD Project for Neuro-Medical Care. On June 14, 2026, we launched our very first free clinic at Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north of Gaza. To understand why this matters, you need to know the context. According to the Ministry of Health, there are over 150,000 recorded injuries in Gaza. Of these, a staggering 7 in every 10 require some form of neuro-intervention. Kamal Adwan is more than just a location for us. It is an act of defiance. It is the hospital closest to the “yellow line” in the north, a place that has suffered immensely and is currently operating at only 5% capacity. For most people in Gaza, traveling for treatment is impossible—whether due to the impossibility of movement or simply the cost. We chose this spot because “Sumud” means remaining steadfast. Our Medical Director and co-founder, Dr. Ahmed Alkahlout, and a team of dedicated volunteers—all doctors, nurses, physicians, and psychosocial workers—are the heart of this project. Stories of SUMUD | Hossam Saada Sumud is an Arabic word that means steadfastness. It means staying rooted to your land, your people, and your humanity — even when everything around you collapses. It is not resignation. It is resistance through presence. Through survival. Through care. Hossam Saada is sumud. A year and a half ago, Hossam was brought to Kamal Adwan Hospital as an unidentified patient. Gunsh0t wound to the head. The bullet exploded inside his brain. Brain herniation. Continuous bleeding. Born with a spinal deformity. Meningomyelocele. I will, God willing, perform the repair and return the neural cyst to its place.” He did. The surgery was successful. An eight-hour-old newborn. What is your “why”? From our first breath, the only thing we are guaranteed is our last. Not love. Not a child’s safety. Not a single day of peace. And yet — in Gaza, against every violence — Dr. Ahmed Alkahlout and his people teach us something called Sumud. Steadfastness. Rootedness.
